#3 — You have a sense of humor.
I don’t know a sh*t of what it’s like to be in the right place at the right time. But I know a lot about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
- I once traveled 500 km by bus to the sea to save a few dollars on my vacation, and when I arrived at the bus station, I was mugged by some strangers.
Lesson: cheap is expensive.
- Years ago, I went to eat at a Chinese restaurant before going out to a party. A friend told me, “Don’t eat so much sweet and sour sauce” I didn’t listen to him, and in the middle of a rave, I got a tight squeeze, and as there was no bathroom, I jumped over a fence to find an intimate place to relieve myself, and the fence pierced my testicle.
Lesson: don’t eat so much sweet and sour sauce.
- Once, I downloaded a dating app and hooked up with a girl. And within days, she called me and told me she had tested positive for Syphilis.
Lesson: dating APPS can put you off dating forever.
I tell you this to illustrate the difference between being intelligent and wise. — I’m not very smart 🙂
Intelligence is a virtue you are born with, and wisdom is something you get by screwing up over and over again.
And if we define a spiritual master as one who is wise, we can also say that he is the one who has screwed up many times, so many times as to be able to share his knowledge about WHAT NOT to do.
But apart from having screwed up many times, there are other signs that you may be a spiritual master, and you haven’t realized it yet; here I share three more.
Let’s start.
1. You know about the power of cycles
And I’m not talking about the washing machine cycle. — even though sometimes life has us in spin mode 🙂
Life is all about cycles, and if you are a spiritual master, you probably know that positive actions lead to serendipities that generate virtuous cycles.
But also, that negative thoughts attract adverse circumstances and toxic relationships into your life, which leads you to enter into what I call the cycle of bullsh*t.
So you have learned to attract the right people by cultivating positive energy. And discard everything that vibrates you densely or generates discomfort.
2. You don’t mind being (or not) the protagonist
Who wants to be Frodo Baggins when you could be Gandalf? 🙂
You are a spiritual master if you realize that life is not about being the first but the second. That is to serve others.
That’s why the bible says, “The last shall be first” or “The proud shall be humbled, and those who humble themselves shall be exalted.”
This doesn’t mean you must go through life opening the door for others or always leaving yourself for the last moment.
It means you enjoy the show, for you, life is Netflix, a party where you are happy and enjoying the here and now.
The spiritual master is generous and does not need to be in the limelight; he is the spectator of reality.
That is why the importance of contemplation in spiritual paths such as the Christianity of St. John of the Cross or the Zen way of Eihei Dōgen.
3. You have a sense of humor
You are a spiritual master when you laugh like Eckart Tolle or the Dalai Lama 🙂
All great masters know that only with a great sense of humor is it possible to reach enlightenment in the case of Buddhism or heaven in the case of Western religions.
That is why in the Bible, Matthew writes that Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, unless you become like little children again, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.”
You need to be positive, cultivate a smile, and good humor, be innocent, and not lose your illusion. And that is not easy.
As we get older, we all become much sourer. All except the true spiritual masters who, if they weren’t Gurus, could be perfectly comedians. Think of
Russell Brand 🙂
