#2. Bad times give you a chance to start over.
All that pain you feel has a reason.
You may not be able to see it today, but you will look back years from now and find to your amazement, that all the storms you went through were necessary.
I know you know this, but it doesn’t comfort you to know it when you’re in the middle of the storm, struggling to survive.
That’s why I want you never to forget that you can get good things, like these three, for example, out of all the wrong things.
1. Bad times purge friends
According to Aristotle, there are three types of friends.
- Friends for utility: these are the people you work with or meet in a course or in some activity.
- Friends for pleasure are friends who want to have fun with you but have no intention of putting up with your depression.
- The virtuous friends are those who are there for you through thick and thin, the ones that we consider family more than friends.
Well, the storms of life make the people who belong to the first two groups leave your life. And only virtuous friends stay.
Therefore, a good storm in your life helps you to know who is who: the true friends and the false ones who are only there to take advantage of you or to pass the time.
And knowing who you can trust in this life is a great advantage; thanks to the bad times, you will know.
2. Bad times give you a chance to start over.
They say that when a door closes, a window opens. But why do we try to go back through that window to where we were kicked out of the front door?
When life, karma, the universe, destiny, or whatever you want to call it closes a door in your face, maybe it’s time to give up and look for something else.
And that’s because we get stuck with things that don’t work,
- Relationships that are dead.
- Friendships that lead us astray.
- Jobs in which we are stuck.
And in the end, a good storm like losing a job, a friend, or a partner forces you to wake up once and for all and look for (following the previous examples) someone who loves you, a real friend, or a job that allows you to fulfill yourself.
And without the storm, you would not get out of your comfort zone, so the bad times also help you to evolve and not stay vegetating in a comfortable but grey existence.
3. Bad times save your life.
I am an expert in bad times; I have spent more than 30 years in bad times, and all because of my ego, which made me think I was the f*cking master when in reality, I was just an idiot.
The storms helped me realize that my value system was wrong and my affections were in disarray.
And thanks to those storms, I finally started to be more humble and grateful, and that got me off the wrong path: a self-destructive path that would have indeed ended me.
And it is thanks to the bad times we know what things are worthwhile, namely family, health, happiness, and friendship. And which things are not worth wasting a second on envying, criticizing, fighting, etc.
And having those things clear can save your life.
Reminder for the memory
- The bad times will teach you who is loyal and a true friend.
- The storms in your life will allow you to close cycles and wounds and reinvent yourself to become someone better.
- The bad times will show you which things matter and which only lead to self-destruction. The bad times will make you humble and grateful.
So even if you are now fighting battles so hard that no one around you can imagine, remember that from all those bad times you are going through, you will come out stronger because pressure turns coal into diamonds.
