Three Paralyzing Beliefs That Kept Me Immersed in Mediocrity

— And maybe you too.

Hi! It’s me. (Photo courtesy of the author)

Tough times always knock on my door since I can remember.

It’s not new for me to struggle to make ends meet.

I spent years eating spaghetti and rice because that was the only food I could afford.

But one day, you look in the mirror and see the truth: your life is a mess because of you.

You don’t have a couple; you don’t have friends; you don’t have money to pay the bills; you don’t have a future: you don’t have hope.

And hurts as hell. (I know it first hand)

The good news is that you see the problem crystal clear: mediocrity

I allowed mediocrity to creep into me and spread like a virus.

Why? Because my mind and soul were in prison for false beliefs, I saw myself as not enough and thought I deserved it.

And I realized that I must reprogram my brain to stop being the underdog.

How? Rebooting the system, deleting cookies, and changing these three paralyzing beliefs.

Paralyzing Belief #1: You are not worthy

For as long as I can remember, I have always been treated like the ugly duckling—a cross between Steve Urkel and Screech.

I was never chosen to go to the dance.

In 2022 we are all very green and good people (or at least we pretend to), but in the 90s, kids were cruel. And that sh*t stays with you.

Maybe not the first humiliation, but when you’re humiliated hundreds of times in different ways, you believe you’re not worth sh*t.

And the problem with that is that you grab whatever opportunity the tide brings to your beach. It doesn’t matter if it’s a wrong opportunity. You think you don’t have a choice and become a conformist.

  • You choose the first person who seems to love you because you are so lacking in love that it shows. And obviously, that person is not the right one because they smell your hunger for affection and take advantage of you.
  • You settle for your job because you believe that you are not the one to climb the corporate ladder. And you let yourself be constantly trampled on by your co-workers. Everyone moves up but you.
  • Your friends… Your friends take advantage of you because you don’t want to lose them, and you become a professional pleaser. You want everyone to like you, and you say yes to everyone. And that’s precisely why you end up being alone.

In short, nobody respects you because you don’t respect yourself.

So the first thing I did to change my luck (and I advise you to do) was to become more demanding with myself and life.

The takeaway: Stop settling. You are worth a lot, but others will decide your value if you don’t know your worth.

Paralyzing Belief #2: Something terrible is going to happen

You always think something wrong will happen if you try to follow your path, right?

You hate your comfort zone but are content with what you have because you don’t want to lose anything else.

I know because I felt the same way.

But you can’t bury your head in the sand and pretend everything will stay the same.

Nothing is going to stay the same.

Living is losing

You will end up losing everything you have: people, stuff, money, youth, even life.

Living in fear is not living.

I lived my life always looking at the ground and following orders. And you know what? I had to stop being the good guy and break some social rules to thrive.

The takeaway: Life is a game, my friend, and you have to bet. Why not in you?

Paralyzing Belief #3: Money is bad

Success = good life

And you can have a good life without being Elon Musk. But you need money.

Don’t blame the player; blame the game.

I don’t make the rules, but the thing is that if you don’t have coins, you can’t play the video game.

I have spent most of my life seeing people with money as villains. And I was wrong.

Money doesn’t change people; it only gives them power.

That’s why putting the money in the right hands is essential.

Having money is not selfish per se; not using it the right way is.

If you give enough value, you get the money.

If you don’t give a sh*t, you are a sponge that takes advantage of the system.

I was one. No more.

The takeaway: If you want a different world, start giving value and investing the money you get in bettering it.

We need leaders like you to make life great again.
