#1. Adults avoided you
Every time I think of my crappy childhood and my later youth (no less horrifying), a voice inside me whispers.
“You chose to be a writer; what would you write about without an interesting life? In the next life, choose to be an accounting consultant. Your accounting consultant, Carl, always smiles in his WhatsApp profile pictures”.
And that voice is right. — Besides, if the past life thing exists, that would explain why I have so many Déjà vu 🙂
Although, if I’m honest, I think that more than past lives are encrypted information our ancestors passed to us in our DNA strands.
Be that as it may, whether you have lived many past lives or your ancestors have had such intense lives that they were engraved in your genetic line if you are what they call an old soul, you will indeed have grown up struggling with these three things.
1. Adults avoided you.
You were bored with people your age, so you liked to be in the company of older people. But adults avoided you.
And not because you were a kid, but because they knew you weren’t just a know-it-all kid but a little Jedi master who asked awkward questions.
Questions like these.
- “Dad, wouldn’t it be better if you didn’t pay for the vacation on the credit card and we stayed home this August than stay home all year to go away for fifteen days in August?”
- “Mom, why is it that every time we celebrate Christmas, we kill a tree and decorate its corpse with little balls and colored lights? I feel sorry when it ends up in the trash on January 7.
- “Grandma, why do you make mom cry? Don’t you know that by hurting her, you are hurting yourself?”
Nobody wanted to listen to you at 8, or 10, or 14, or 20 because you made them feel smaller than you. And even if the older ones like to do stupid things, they don’t like the younger ones to realize they are doing them.
And that’s precisely what happens when you grow up as an old soul; you become the fluorescent light that highlights all the crap of the adults around you.
2. Your intuition was not always welcome
They couldn’t hide from you behind their fake smiles.
And you always seemed to have the correct phrase at the right time to lighten other people’s sorrow.
Phrases like,
- “Don’t worry, your adult self will be the person your baby self needs today, your best friend.”
- “One day, you will heal all those things you don’t discuss.”
- “You haven’t met all the people who will love you yet. Stop crying about that stupid guy.”
And although people were relieved to hear you, they shunned you because no one likes to be made of glass. And to you, people are transparent. And no matter how much they try to pull back the curtains of their lives, you see behind all their masks.
3. You had to pretend that you are not an old soul.
Because you know too much.
And I’m not just talking about knowing that deep down, when your co-worker smiles at you and says good morning, they are trying to tell you.
“You again. I hope you get the flu, to stop seeing you for a while.”
No. That’s not old soul; that’s newbie.
You’re a cross between Sherlock Holmes and the Sixth Sense kid, and you know stuff like this.
- Your best friend doesn’t dye her hair blue because she’s antisocial (that’s what she pretends you believe). She does it because she desperately wants to fit in.
- Your cousin doesn’t tattoo his face and dress up in Lacoste polo shirts and Dockers because he wants to be the living example of the word “contradiction.” Your cousin is not a rebel without a cause (as his parents think). He is taking a marketing and personal branding plan to the extreme.
And as in the previous points, people get scared. Because no one wants them to guess his intentions as clearly as you do, they don’t want you to read their minds and discover their dirty lies.
And that’s why you have to pretend that you don’t know what you know, that you are not an old soul.
